At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
