Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
