The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
