Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
